So I'm not sure, but I think Sophie may be teething. I have been thinking this off and on for a couple of weeks. Maybe it's just wishful thinking - not that I'm anxious for her to have teeth (ouch!), but I'm anxious to know there's a reason for some erratic behavior. She has been drooling like crazy for weeks, but now she is biting down on her fingers (and mine, and anything else she can get in her mouth, for that matter), has smelly gas (sorry for the non-mothers out there...Erik hates when I talk about this stuff) and is waking up multiple times in the night with bad gas and seemingly in a lot of pain (not to eat, just to scream). Of course this may not be teething - I've tried to see teeth in there, but her tongue does not cooperate with my fingers. It does look like the middle is raised a bit, but I could be imagining it.
Anyway, if any of you moms out there have any tips for me I'd love to hear them. I've read a lot about Hyland's Teething Tablets, but as it turns out they have milk in them so she can't have them. I have a call in to her pediatrician to see about giving her a little Tylenol ocassionally for the pain, but I don't want to drug her too much. So we'll see what happens. Regardless, we all three are realizing that whenever it does happen, teething will be no laughing matter.

hey catherine! when was sophie born? it looks like she and our twins (rebekah and rachel) might be exactly the same age... they were born oct 5. now i don't know any more than you on the teething thing... but rachel is a serious drooler and attempts to put anything and everything in her mouth. we've had several people ask "oh is she teething" - but we have no idea! :) anyway... i feel your pain... hang in there!! great to be back in touch with you. motherhood is a grand, but exhausting, adventure, isn't it??

Cath,
she's totally teething!! i think most babies start teething around 6 months, but yesterday i saw a one month old that had her first two bottom teeth already in. if she's drooling a lot and being a bit cranky, that almost confirms it...plus if she starts to have a fever, that's totally normal too with teething....one thing to keep in mind (and we can talk about this more this weekend, but when she starts to drool excessively, try to keep her sitting up instead lying on her back. i realize that it's impossible to keep her up all the time, but that will cut back on the risk of her getting an inner ear infection. almost about the tylenol....GIVE IT TO HER!!! i know you don't want to drug or overmedicate her, but if you're in pain, you can take something (well, before you got pregnant, you could anyway)...she can't, and she can't tell you she's in pain, she can only fuss. anyway, all that to say, we give tylenol to newborns and it's not big deal if she has a good liver!! so as long as you aren't putting strong liquor in her bottle, she'll probably be just fine. ok, i just got off the phone with you, so i won't say any more, but here's the formula for that specific concentration of tylenol if you ever want to refer back to it again with a new weight.
ok, the one we used tonight was this:
13.2 (sophie's pounds) / 2.2 (kilograms per pound)
x 15 (milligram per kilogram of tylenol) x .8 (mls)
/ 80 (mgs)
therefore:
13.2/2.2*15*.8/80=0.9mls
if you use this formula, the answer will always be in mls
ok, i'm officially the nerdy overprotective overbearing aunt/sister-in-law....and i don't care.
love you so much!!!

Jennifer, that's an answer! WOW! Who needs experience when you've got medical expertise in the family!
